For those considering professional careers as art historians, critics, or museum and gallery professionals, the Department of Art and Art History offers graduate work leading to the doctor of philosophy. Ph.D. students entering with an M.A. take nine courses, while those entering without an M.A. take 15, plus the doctoral dissertation course. Students must demonstrate proficiency in two languages other than English and pass written and oral preliminary exams.
